How does a Phone Card Work?

Phone cards let you buy minutes that you can use to make long distance calls. You can buy phone cards for as little as five dollars, but companies often have promotions that provide better long distance rates if you pay more for your phone card. Each company has different rates for international calls. Calling to a regular home phone is the cheapest, and calling to a cell phone is more expensive. This is important to remember when you are buying a phone card.

Using A Phone Card:
1) Using a touch tone phone (home or cellphone is ok) you will dial an access number that is usually free. ex. 1-800-555-1235
2) When you are connected you are told to enter your PIN.
3) Normally you will be told your balance at this point.
4) Next you dial the number you are trying to reach. For more help with this see our section on
how to dial interntaional.
5) Your card will tell you how many minutes you have for your call.
6) Now you can enjoy talking to friends and family in other countries!
